■Sightseeing Guide

The Akiu Hot Springs is counted as one of the three best hot springs in Japan. It located upstream of Natori River and takes approximately 30 minutes by car from central Sendai. It represents a proud long history, and as legend goes, it is said that the hot spring is over 1,000 years old. During the era of the domains, a therapeutic spa of the Date Clan was located here. It is also said that the hot springs have beneficial effects on rheumatism, lumbar pain and arthritis.

Rairaikyo Gorge

This 20 meter deep valley goes on for approximately a kilometer, centering on the Nozokibashi Bridge at the gateway of the Akiu Hot Springs. The unusually shaped stones and rocks and the seasonal changes in the scenery fascinate tourists. There is a walking trail along the valley where one can enjoy a stroll.

The 6m wide, 55m high Akiu Great Falls is counted as one of the three biggest falls in Japan, and is literally a great falls. It is worth seeing the scenery of the falls in the early summer with the green, and that of the fall with colored leaves. There is also the Akiu Great Falls Botanical Garden nearby, where plants from Mt. Zao can be found.

This 200m tall, 3km long columnar structure developed due to the erosion of numerous rocks, and can be found here at the Banji-iwa. The sight is well-known for beautiful tinted leaves in the fall.
