The city of Tagajo is where the capital and the defense department of Michinoku (the current Tohoku) region were located during the Nara (710-784A.D.) and Heian (794-1192A.D.) era. The city prospered as the center of politics and culture of Tohoku region for approximately 600 years. "The Site of Tagajo" is designated as a national historic site. The site has the remains of the provincial office with the ruins of cornerstones, the "Iris Garden" which is rich with the ancient atmosphere of Manyo, and the Old Monument of Tagajo Castle (a monument of a jar) where the master of Haiku poetic literature Matsuo Basho (1644-1694) shed tears of gratitude in his book of journey entitled "Okuno Hosomichi". The "Tohoku Historical Museum" is the largest in the Tohoku region, and is a must-see spot.
