There are many summer festivals featuring fireworks and large parades, but there are also festivals in smaller, unspoiled areas.

Tanabata is a festival of prayer to the stars. In Sendai, the main street is buried under bright Tanabata decorations made of Japanese paper. One of the Tohoku region three main festivals and famous for its size, it is held between August 6 - 8.

On the third Sunday in May in the main festival, a parade made up of decorated floats, a samurai warriors procession and the Suzume-odori (sparrow dance) makes its way down the main street in an event made even more lively by the large number of onlookers.

Many of the trees in the main street of Sendai, which is known as the forest city, are deciduous. Every year in December, many tiny lights are attached to trees that have lost their leaves, transforming the street into a dream world.

Every year on August 5, the portable shrines of Shiwahiko Shrine and Shiogama Shrine are loaded onto two boats that cruise around Matsushima Bay. One is shaped like a dragon and the other one like a phoenix. They are accompanied by at least 100 fishing boats flying brightly colored flags. The festival is held to pray for a high yield of fish.
