Umen, the specialty of Shiroishi-city, is a wheat noodle produced using a unique technique. In the museum, there is an entertaining demonstration of the traditional method of lengthening the noodles by hand.

There are several types of kokeshi wooden dolls, and Zao is the area that produces the Togatta kokeshi. The museum displays wooden toys of various types, including kokeshi from all over the country. You can also paint the Kokeshi that have been shaped.

The Shinkansen yard for the Tohoku region opened in 1982 as the main railway line for northern Honshu. It is popular as the marshalling yard for the Shinkansen, which boasts the highest train speeds in the world.

Marine Gate Shiogama / Shioigama-city |
Next to Shiogama, Matsushima town and Bay is considered one of the 3 famous views in Japan and Matsushima bay consists of over 260 islands. The area has been revered for hundreds of years for its beauty in all 4 seasons. There are several boat tours available including a regular line between Shiogama and Matsusima town, taking a scenic route around some of the islands. The sight seeing ferry terminal is located in front of Shiogama's new "Marine Gate" complex. The Marine Gate complex includes a selection of restaurants which combine the freshest seafood with a view overlooking the harbor for relaxed dining, an outdoor deck and observation platform, and many shops and stalls selling locally produced foods, goods and souvenirs. Taking a local ferry line from the Marine Gate docks, visitors can also stop off and explore Shiogama's Urato islands.
