A Delightful Mix of City and Country
Miyagi Prefecture is the central prefecture of northern Honshu and contains Sendai, the premier city of Japan's Tohoku region. Sendai was the castle town of Masamune Date, an influential samurai of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. From this stronghold, he ruled a large territory that included present day Miyagi Prefecture.
Important buildings from the period can still be seen in Sendai City and Matsushima.
Within the prefecture, you will find Matsushima, one of the three most famous views in Japan, with its beautiful archipelago scenery. Fields that boast the highest production of rice in Japan stretch inland, and there are famous hot springs and natural beauty spots in the mountains.
It takes a little under two hours by Shinkansen to reach the area. It is a beautiful region that mixes the best of city and countryside.
