Design and hand-paint your own Kokeshi doll and bring it back as a souvenir.

Surrounded by Japanese traditional industrial arts, participants will experience hand-painting a kokeshi doll, which helps better understand Japanese culture. Pick a kokeshi which comes in different sizes and design a pattern freely to create an original kokeshi. It will be the one and only in the world.

Professional kokeshi creators have kept the skills of kokeshi making handed down for generations and help participants with painting to make sure everyone from kids to the elderly can enjoy the experience. It's a great opportunity to feel Japanese traditional culture.

The venue is just left to the reception area in the premises called "Gangu-an". At the reception, a participant informs the staff that he/she would like to experience hand painting a kokeshi doll.

The staff will explain about painting.
As the procedures of hand painting is shown with illustrations, it's easy to understand even for a beginner.

Pick a kokeshi doll and start painting.
There are two different sizes; large and small. Please choose one suitable to your purpose.
Small ones are especially popular among ladies as they are cute.

Finishing with lacquer

Finishing with lacquer

After hand painting, lacquer the doll to make it shine beautifully and finish it. The last touch-up will be done by a professional craftsman while the participant can observe how to finish his/her kokeshi.

Once it's finished, the participant can pick up the doll in a paper bag.
Do not forget to bring the original kokeshi back.
Professionally made kokeshi dolls are available for purchase in the store.
